The human ear is capable of hearing a wide range of volume levels and frequencies, and in order to get the best out of them, we need to manage/control volume in the studio. This is where a dB meter comes in handy!

Every studio should have one sitting right there on the computer screen or on your desk/console, displaying exactly what’s going on, level-wise!

You can also use the dB meter for level matching two sources for accurate A/B comparisons. Perfect for checking a “commercial” mix with one of your ‘rough’ mixes, so you don’t fall into the “loud is better” trap!

For best results, keep your volume level consistent from session to session, and keep the volume the same as your mix or track volume changes. Remember working too loud can cause permanent damage!
