
Here’s some quick tips to keep in mind the next time you’re mixing a track:
- Mastering will not fix anything, get it right in the mix
- Mix at lower volumes – if you can’t hear something at a lower volume then it may be to low in the mix
- Consider using automation instead of compression to control volume
- Take a break – mixing is fatiguing on the ears
- If it sounds good, leave it!
- Mix drums and bass first – I typically start with the kick, then as other elements are added and the kick loses punch, i can adjust
- If your not sure on something – sleep on it!
- Learn to use your DAW’s tools first
- Use spectrum analyzers and meters
- But in the end trust your ears!
