Here’s some quick tips to keep in mind the next time you’re mixing a track:

 

  • Mastering will not fix anything, get it right in the mix
  • Mix at lower volumes – if you can’t hear something at a lower volume then it may be to low in the mix
  • Consider using automation instead of compression to control volume
  • Take a break – mixing is fatiguing on the ears
  • If it sounds good, leave it!
  • Mix drums and bass first – I typically start with the kick, then as other elements are added and the kick loses punch, i can adjust
  • If your not sure on something – sleep on it!
  • Learn to use your DAW’s tools first
  • Use spectrum analyzers and meters
  • But in the end trust your ears!
